As Selection Sunday approached for the women's NCAA tournament, the top overall seed remained a hotly contested debate between UConn and UCLA, while NBA star Victor Wembanyama delivered a dominant performance for the San Antonio Spurs, and the Philadelphia Eagles secured tight end Dallas Goedert with a new contract, providing critical financial flexibility.
NCAA Women's Tournament Seeding Battle Intensifies
The selection committee is still working on the 2026 women's NCAA tournament bracket in Indianapolis, though they've already locked in most of the big calls. UConn, UCLA, Texas, and South Carolina got the No. 1 seeds a week back when the Power 4 conference tournaments wrapped up. With the release of the top 16 seeds on Saturday, the committee also confirmed which teams will host opening-weekend games.
But here's the thing—nobody knows yet which team will get the top overall seed. Reigning champion UConn and UCLA are the primary contenders, with the committee weighing their impressive seasons. Since ESPN's Bracketology first projected the field in October, UConn has consistently held the top spot. UConn's still undefeated and has nine Quad 1 wins, which is impressive. They also secured the top seed in the committee's prior top-16 reveals on February 14 and March 1.
UCLA's got a real argument though. UCLA's numbers are just as good: 18 Quad 1 wins, the best 'wins above bubble' mark (that's a new stat), and the toughest schedule in the country. Since the March 1 standings reveal, UCLA went on to win both the Big Ten regular-season championship and the conference tournament title, capped by a commanding 51-point victory over Iowa in the tournament final last Sunday. Winning both the regular season and tournament in the nation's second-best conference might be enough to push UCLA past UConn for the No. 1 spot.
Who gets the top seed will basically determine where all the other No. 1 and No. 2 seeds end up. The bracketing rules say you can't put four teams from the same conference in the same region. So LSU and Vanderbilt can't be in the same region as South Carolina or Texas, both of which are No. 1 seeds.
If UConn gets the top seed, they'll be in Fort Worth with either LSU or Vanderbilt—whichever one the committee ranks lower. That'd give the lower seed a travel break—Fort Worth instead of Sacramento, where UCLA would be. The committee sticks to its rules and focuses on how teams are playing now, not trying to set up specific matchups later.
Wembanyama's Dominant Return Fuels Spurs' Surge
Victor Wembanyama came back Saturday after sitting out one game and showed everything he's got in the Spurs' 115-102 win over Charlotte. The win capped off a strong six-game homestand at Frost Bank Center, showing how hot the Spurs have been lately.
Wembanyama dropped 32 points and added 12 rebounds, 8 assists, 4 blocks, and 2 steals. That's only the second time in his career he's put up 30+ points, 10+ rebounds, 5+ assists, and multiple blocks and steals in one game. That ties him with George Gervin for the third-most games like that in Spurs history, per ESPN Research. Only Tim Duncan (9) and David Robinson (19) have more games like that in franchise history.
The Spurs have been on fire—they're 17-2 since Feb. 1, the best in the league. They went 5-1 on this homestand, and they're rolling right now. Coach Mitch Johnson said these games have helped them figure out what other teams do and what they're capable of. He talked about learning from different kinds of games—defensive schemes, physical play, closing out games—stuff that'll help them down the road.
Wembanyama came out firing, scoring 11 points in the first quarter on 4-of-7 shooting with two threes. He had 18 points by halftime, leading the game. In the third quarter, he showed off his passing, hitting Luke Kornet with two alley-oops. He threw another alley-oop to Stephon Castle in the fourth, and Castle finished it with a two-handed reverse dunk.
Wembanyama commented on his expanding playmaking, calling it
The full NCAA women's tournament bracket, revealing all regional pairings and final seeding decisions, will be unveiled at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.
