Nineteen-year-old Kimi Antonelli secured his debut Formula One victory at the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai on Sunday, leading a Mercedes 1-2 finish while Lewis Hamilton clinched his first podium for Ferrari in a race marred by catastrophic reliability issues for several teams.
Antonelli's Breakthrough Performance
The Italian prodigy, driving for Mercedes, delivered a confident and assured performance, beating his teammate George Russell into second place. This win makes Antonelli the second-youngest driver to ever win a Formula One race, a record previously held only by four-time champion Max Verstappen. It was a momentous achievement in only his 26th Grand Prix start and his second season in the sport, marking him as the first Italian race winner in two decades, following Giancarlo Fisichella's 2006 Malaysian Grand Prix victory.
Wolff backed the bold call to promote Antonelli to replace Hamilton in 2025. At just 18 years old, Antonelli became the third-youngest driver in F1 history. He had bypassed F3 and completed only one season in F2 in 2024, finishing sixth, before his rapid ascent to Mercedes. Plenty of people questioned it, but Wolff stuck to his guns—he believed Antonelli was the future.
The Bologna-born driver, son of sportscar racer Marco Antonelli, had a mixed rookie year in 2025 while learning F1's ropes. He showed genuine pace but made the rookie mistakes you'd expect. He's admitted he's still figuring out how hard to push, but China showed real maturity. With Mercedes finally delivering a car that's the best on the grid, Antonelli delivered—nine seconds clear of Russell.
Hamilton's First Ferrari Podium Amidst Fierce Ferrari Battle
Hamilton's second year at Ferrari finally brought a podium—he finished third. It's his first podium since Las Vegas last year. He didn't score a single podium in his first Ferrari season. He battled Leclerc all race and finally got the better of him for third.
Hamilton got a blistering start and blasted past both Mercedes around the outside at Turn 1 to grab the lead. But Antonelli used Mercedes' pace advantage to blast back into first and never let go—not even through the early safety car. Russell lost ground at the start but clawed his way past both Ferraris after the safety car restart, even though he was struggling for grip.
McLaren and Verstappen Suffer Disastrous Outings
It was a disaster for defending champ Lando Norris and teammate Oscar Piastri. Both had electrical gremlins before the start and had to head back to the garage. Neither made it to the grid. For Norris, it was the first time he'd ever failed to start a Grand Prix. Piastri still hasn't started a race all season—a nightmare start to his year.
Four-time champ Max Verstappen had a rough weekend in China too. He couldn't get away from eighth on the grid and dropped to 13th. He retired on Lap 46 with an unspecified issue. Reliability gremlins hit others too—Stroll's Aston stopped early with a suspected battery problem, and Alonso had to quit the other one after losing feeling in his hands from engine vibration. Bortoleto and Albon didn't even make it to the grid.
Championship Tightens as Mercedes Dominates
The 1-2 was Mercedes' second of the season, showing just how strong their car and drivers are. With the win, Antonelli's now just four points behind Russell in the championship. Mercedes' gamble on the young Italian is paying off, and it looks like we're in for a proper fight between the two of them for the title.
Even after losing the lead early, Antonelli kept his cool and showed a maturity that proved Mercedes made the right call backing him.
