Thad Matta, a veteran college basketball coach known for his 502 career wins and 13 NCAA Tournament appearances across multiple programs, announced his retirement Monday from his head coaching position at Butler University.

A Career Defined by Wins and Consistency

Matta, 58, leaves the sidelines after 21 seasons as a head coach, having built a formidable reputation at Butler (twice), Xavier, and Ohio State. Matta finished with a 502-223 record, proof of his sustained winning across multiple programs. But Matta did more than rack up wins—he constructed programs that stayed competitive year after year.

He won eight conference regular season titles across Butler, Xavier, and Ohio State. His teams always competed for championships, which defined how he coached. Beyond conference play, he also guided his squads to two NCAA Final Four appearances, culminating in one memorable run to the national championship game.

Reaching 500 wins puts Matta in rare company—only a handful of coaches have done it. That's what happens when you spend decades recruiting well and developing players. You could count on seeing Matta's teams in March Madness almost every year.

Returning Home, Then Stepping Away

Matta came back to Butler before the 2022-23 season, returning to where his head coaching career started. He had first led the Bulldogs in 2000, launching his head coaching career there. It felt like coming home—a chance to lead the program that meant so much to him.

In his four seasons back at Butler, the team went 63-69. This included a 16-16 finish in the 2025-26 season. After the season ended, he thought it over and decided to quit coaching.

“After taking some time to reflect following the end of the season, I have decided that the time has come for me to step away from the sidelines,” Matta said in a statement. He made clear how much Butler meant to him. “The love my wife, my daughters and I have for Butler is what brought us back four years ago, and it feels especially meaningful that I conclude my coaching career here.”

Matta had stepped away once before. He left Ohio State in 2017 after 13 years, citing health problems. He was out for five years before Butler brought him back. His earlier break probably shaped this decision—he's prioritizing his health after decades of coaching.

Ohio State's Golden Era Under Matta

His best years came at Ohio State, where he went 337-123. Under Matta, Ohio State became a Big Ten powerhouse and national contender. The Buckeyes won 20+ games in each of his first 12 seasons—an incredible run in the Big Ten.

Matta took Ohio State to two Final Fours. In 2007, his Greg Oden-led team won the Big Ten regular season and tournament. That team captured fans' attention as they fought through the tournament. They beat Georgetown to reach the title game but lost 84-75 to Florida, who won back-to-back championships.

Five years later in 2012, the No. 2 seed Buckeyes made another Final Four run. They lost 64-62 to Kansas in a tight semifinal. His knack for rebuilding and keeping Ohio State at the top cemented his legacy there. In 2017, his final year, Ohio State went 17-15, ending his streak of 20-win seasons.

Building Blocks at Xavier and First Butler Stint

Before Ohio State, Matta made his mark at Xavier in three seasons. Xavier won 26 games in each of his three years there. He built a winning program that lasted after he left.

In 2004, his last year at Xavier, he led a Cinderella run to the Elite Eight. As a 7-seed, Xavier beat No. 2 Mississippi State and No. 3 Texas. They lost by three to No. 1 Duke, showing Matta knew how to get teams ready for big games.

Matta started coaching at Butler in 2000, then moved to Xavier and Ohio State. That early success showed he could win anywhere in college basketball.

Matta, who earned his 500th career win on February 18 against Georgetown, will remain with Butler University in a new administrative capacity, serving as special assistant to the president and athletic director.
