The North Allegheny School District declared its fifth flexible instruction day this year, disrupting normal school operations as cleanup continued across the region following severe windstorms that left thousands without power. Meanwhile, the district also announced the opening of registration for its popular "Just For Girls" summer sports camp, offering local students a chance to engage in athletics.
District Implements Flexible Instruction Day Amid Windstorm Aftermath
District officials moved to a flexible instruction model for the fifth time this academic year, citing ongoing cleanup efforts from recent windstorms. The decision came as residents across the area, including those within the North Allegheny community, grappled with widespread power outages. Many homes remained without electricity days after the storms swept through, making traditional in-person learning difficult or impossible for many students and staff.
On flexible instruction days, students usually work on assignments from home. Without power, families couldn't get online or reach digital materials. Utility crews tackled downed trees and power lines to get service back. The district wanted to keep students and staff safe and give families time to deal with the mess.
Impact of Severe Weather on Local Communities
The windstorms caused considerable damage across Allegheny County, extending beyond the immediate school district boundaries. Thousands of local homeowners faced a new week still without power, a direct result of the severe weather that brought down trees and utility poles. Areas like Allison Park saw significant damage, with one utility pole left dangling across part of Babcock Boulevard on Presidential Drive.
The outages showed how hard it is for schools to keep running when storms hit. Flexible instruction days beat full closures, but they only work if kids have power and internet—which plenty of families didn't have. The cleanup showed how much the community had to deal with after the storms.
Summer Sports Camp Registration Now Open
Despite the recent operational adjustments, the North Allegheny School District is also looking ahead to summer, announcing that registration for its "Just For Girls" sports camp is officially open. The camp lets girls try different sports and build their skills.
The camp is scheduled to run from Monday, July 27, through Thursday, July 30, with daily sessions from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Marshall Middle School and North Allegheny Senior High School will host the activities, utilizing the district's athletic facilities to accommodate the diverse range of sports offered.
Promoting Female Athletics and Skill Development
Designed for girls in second through sixth grades, the "Just For Girls" camp aims to introduce students of all skill levels to the female athletic programs available through the North Allegheny School District. Girls can try basketball, softball, volleyball, field hockey, lacrosse, golf, wrestling, and flag football. The camp welcomes all skill levels so girls can find new sports they love or get better at ones they already play.
District coaches, current student-athletes, and staff members will be on hand each day to provide instruction and guidance, offering mentorship and expertise to the young participants. Working with real coaches and athletes gives kids real guidance and motivation. The cost for the four-day program is $195 per participant, and interested families can register online, though space is limited, encouraging prompt sign-ups to secure a spot for their child.
